SEO Glossary has been developed to help the user find meaning with the many words/terms used in the SEO industry

The SEO Glossary below provides the words and definitions intended to help the SEO newcomer better understand the jargon of what has become an important industry in itself.  SEO or search engine optimization is a key area of web development and internet marketing which has its own language.  This language can be very foreign to anyone just beginning to work with it, so the SEO glossary should shed some light on just what all these SEO terms mean.

LinkAnchor Text link label, link text, or link title is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink. What the user actually sees. The words contained in the anchor text can determine the ranking that the page will receive by search engines.  Anchor text is ranked highly in search engine algorithms, because the linked text is usually relevant to the landing page.  Different classifications of anchor text are:

Exact Match - an anchor that is used with a keyword that mirrors the page that is being linked to. Example: “search engine optimization" is an exact match anchor because it's linking to a page about "search engine optimization.

Branded - a brand that is used as the anchor. "Starbucks" is a branded anchor text.

Naked Link - an URL that is used as an anchor. "" is a naked link anchor.

Generic - a generic word or phrase that is used as the anchor. "Click here" is a generic anchor. Other variations may include "go here", "visit this website", etc.

Images - whenever an image is linked, Google will use the "alt" tag as the anchor text.

Article WritingArticle Writing (blogging), done correctly, can give you credibility and the search engines love good content which should be found throughout your article(s).  One of your goals, in writing ar ticles for your website, is to make sure the content is educational.  Remember not to use the articles as a way to promote yourself - in fact, it is a good rule to only mention yourself once in any given article.

Backlinks Technology Online Web ConceptLinks (backlinks) are also identified as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links all which link to a website or web page.  The number of b acklinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page. For example, this is one of the factors considered by Google to determine the page rank of a webpage.

Blog Blogging Comunication Connect Data Social ConceptBlog is a truncation of the expression weblog and is a regularly updated website or web page, typically run by an individua l or small group and is written in an informal or conversational style. Blogs must be regularly updated with new material.

CSS describes how elements should be rendered on screen, on paper, in speech, or on other media.

This is done by delivering content based on the IP addresses or the User-Agent HTTP header of the user requesting the page.

Words Have PowerContent Amount on average webpage content ranges from 300 to 450 words but top ranking pages usually contain 1,000 + words. To achieve a good content amount, consider your competitor’s keywords, concepts and word count. Formatting is critical considering web users spend 10-20 seconds on any given page. Check that you do not have too much content and that you can point to strong formatting; good font, short paragraphs, words in bold, headings and bulleted lists where needed.

Ip Tracking And Reverse, RetargetingConversion tracking refers to the electronic tracking of the incidences where a visitor to a website responds (converts) by purchasing something, sending an RFQ, sending an e-mail, filling out and sending a survey form, or other electronic communication from the website. This is accomplished by coding the “Thank You” page that is generated after each “conversion” event. This coding enables a visitor tracking report of the “Thank You” pages and appears on the “visited pages” report of most tracking software programs.

Conversions can also occur by the visitor making a phone call to the website’s owner (company or person) but these conversion events are usually not tracked electronically. Using a dedicated 800# is a common method of tracking phone calls from a website (conversions) and is an important element in calculating the actual ROI from the website’s marketing program.

Domain Registration Concept.Domain Registrations include your domain and provide further servi ces such as domain privacy, domain transfers, Whois domain look up and domain auctions.

Page To DoorDoorway Pages are web pages that are created for spamdexing. They are also referred to as portal pages, gateway pages, entry pages, jump pages.  They are bad for users because they can lead to multiple similar pages in user search results, where each result ends up taking the user to essentially the same destination.

Energy Pass HouseFile Naming also written as filename or file name is a name used to uniquely identify a computer file stored in a file system. Different file systems impose different restrictions on filename lengths and the allowed characters within filenames.  A filename may include one or more of these components:

*  host (or node or server) – n etwork device that contains the file

*  device (or drive) – hardware device or drive

*  directory (or path) – directory tree (e.g., /usr/bin\TEMP[USR.LIB.SRC], etc.)

*  file – base name of the file

*  type (format or extension) – indicates the content type of the file

     (e.g. .txt, .exe,.COM, etc.)   

  *  version – revision or generation number of the file

It usually appears in bold or set off in some other manner from the other content in that section. These headers are labeled in the HTML source code as H1 through H6 with H1 describing the most important section and is usually at, or near, the top of the visible page. Headers are very important SEO structural components of a website because they tell the search engines what you consider to be the most important content of the page.

Note: Headers with CSS.  When using CSS it is usually best to define the H tags (H1, H2, H3, etc) in the style sheet.

A markup la nguage is a set of markup tags. HTML documents are described by HTML tags. Each HTML tag describes different document content.

Business man pointing the text: The Power of KeywordsKeyword Density refers to the number of times a particular keyword or key phrase occurs on a single web page of a website. Usually this keyword or key phrase is what the website’s owner wishes to come up in the search engines’ results pages for search queries using that keyword or closely related keywords. In addition to keyword density, the location and presentation of the keyword is also taken into account by the search engine.

Local SEO is focused on providing results that are relevant to a searcher based on their current location.  For example, using your smartphone, you are searching for a hospital in the area you are traveling in.  A Google search will locate hospital(s) in that area with directions of how to get there.

Hole In The WebpageMeta Description refers to the description of the particular web page on a website and is usually found (if it is there) underneath the meta title at the top of the source code for that page. It is important for the same reason the meta title is important in that the search engines will usually use the meta description or the meta title to describe the web page.

Key With Keywords Text As Symbol For SEO Or OptimizationMeta Keywords refer to the keywords for a particular web page on a website and is usually found (if they are there) underneath the meta description at the top of the source code for that page. Keywords are not nearly as important as the meta title and description and are usually ign ored by the search engines. The reason why they are now ignored is most likely because of “spamming” where websites would use too many keywords, repeated them, and/or added irrelevant ones, to try and get position for certain keywords they were interested in. These keywords often did not correspond to content on the page. 

HTML meta tags in red light and dark green with mouse pointerMeta Tags refers to special headings in the website’s source code that are used to describe each page of the website in terms of the page’s title, description, and keywords which usually appear at the top of each source code page. Meta tags also are used to identify picture and graphic content in a manner that is readable to the Search Engine’s robots (spiders).

Title Tags Concept through Magnifier.Meta Title refers to the title of a particular web page on a website and is usually found (if it is there) at the top of the source code for that page. It is important because the search engines will usually use that meta title or the meta description to describe the webpage on their results page. By omitting this tag you lose control of how you title your own page and leave it to the search engine to pick up text from the page and use that as the page title.

Data Mirroring ConceptMirror Pages merely duplicates content already avai lable on some other website, usually as a web mirror or FTP mirror.

Seo Or Sem ConceptOrganic position refers to the position a site receives on the search engine’s non advertised results pages for any particular keyword or key phrase) used in a search query. Organic position is most commonly based upon a search engine’s algorithmic formula made up of several factors which the search engine has determined will generally produce a better relevant and qualitative match to a given search query.

Page RankPage Rank refers to the numerical rank assigned to “a page” meaning an entire website by the search engines. The rank is based almost entirely on the number of pages a website contains. While larger sites therefore have greater page ranking, this does not mean that for a particular search query that site will rank higher in the Organic positioning than smaller sites because other factors affect the position, i.e. relevance and other factors.

Pay-per-click is calculated by dividing the advertising cost by the number of clicks generated by an advertisement. The basic formula is:

The results delivered are presumed, by algorithmic application, to be the most relevant to the particular search term used in the query.

Review Increase RatingReviews (Websites-Online Articles) can be posted about people, businesses, products, or services. These sites are generally supported by advertising.  A new type of review site has emerged which is referred t o as the affiliate product review site. This type of site is usually professionally designed and written to maximize conversions, and is used by e-commerce marketers.  Keep in mind that reviews of this type are not objective.

Typically, bots perform tasks that are both simple and structurally repetitive, at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human alone. The largest use of bots is in web spidering in which an automated script fetches, analyzes and files information from web servers at many times the speed of a human.

Bots are routinely used on the Internet where the emulation of human activity is required, for example chat bots. A simple question and answer exchange online may appear to be with another person, when in fact, it is simply with a bot.

RSS folderRSS Feeds (Rich Site Summary; originally RDF Site Summary; often called Really Simple Syndication) uses a f amily of standard web feed formats to publish frequently updated information: blog entries, news headlines, audio, video.

Search Engine AdvertisingSearch Engine Advertising is any advertising that is sponsored or initiated by a search engine. Usually the advertising is published on-line at the Search Engine’s results pages or on affiliated websites with content related to the advertiser’s products and/or services. There are other forms of online advertising that are not initiated by a search engine where the advertised contracts directly with a website for direct advertising, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, NYTimes, etc..

PlacementSearch Engine Submissions (Registrations) is how a webmaster submits a website directly to a search engine. Generally, however, this method is not always necessary because Google, Yahoo and Bing use crawlers, bots and spiders that can this work.  If you have developed a new website and would rather not wait around for a search engine to find it on its own or you want a web page or website updated in a respective search engine, then submit your website via search engine submission directly.

CodeServer Side Includes (SSI) is a simple interpreted server-side scripting language used almost exclusively for the web. Server side includes are also useful for including a common piece of code throughout a site, such as a page header, a page footer and a navigation menu.

In order for a web ser ver to recognize an SSI-enabled HTML file and therefore carry out these instructions, either the filename should end with a special extension by default .shtml, .stm, .shtm, or, if the server is configured to allow this, set the execution bit of the file.                                                                       

Html5 CodeSource Code refers to a website’s HTML or other coding (CSS, Flash etc) that is used by a website to generate the site’s text, graphic, and programmed content. It is not part of the visible site but can usually be accessed (if not other wise blocked) by right clicking on a web page and from the list that appears, scrolling down to an item called “View source” and left clicking on it to open contents. Mac users can access the source code for a web page from a pull-down menu at the top of their screens.

SponsorSponsored listings generally refer to the listings (advertisements) that appear on the search engine’s results pages of any search query and for which an advertiser has agreed to pay the search engine every time a searcher “clicks” on their listing. See also PPC- Pay Per Click.

Sponsored listings also appear on thousands of non search engine pages where an advertiser, because of the site’s relevance or/or popularity, has agreed to pay the site owner a fee. This is usually enabled by a search engine in cooperation with website owners and the advertising fee paid by the advertiser is divided between the Search Engine and the site owner. W3CW3C stands for The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and is an international community where member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop web standards.
