Local Search Optimization (SEO) is for firms with a local or regional market and is pretty much the same as SEO for any business except that it will be including keywords and content related to specific location(s).

Local Search Optimization (SEO) for a local or regional market is pretty much the same as SEO for any business except that it will be including keywords and content related to a specific location(s).

There is some advantage for local search optimization in that the competition is often less (but not always!) and so it is sometimes easier to achieve organic positioning for keywords in a local market. Here, as in all SEO efforts, the important key is to first have a great website with great content that is relevant to the keywords being promoted.

It is good to keep in mind, however, that page ranking is just that, and not so much overall site ranking. To clarify, a law firm with more than one specialty will want to build specific pages with “rich and relevant” content for that  specialty in order to get good ranking in the SERPs (See SEO Glossary).

What is true for the specialty, such as a law firm, is also true for the location so that if a law firm has offices in different locations it is a good idea to have even a specific page for each location with internal links to the particular specialties of law being offered. Interactive Google or MapQuest maps with direction finders would also be content for the specific location(s).

With your SEO Copywriting  it is essential to know that the search engine wants to deliver the most “rich and relevant” content for the keyword being searched. However, if the SE (Search Engine)  “delivers” a law firm in Chicago for the search term “DUI attorney”, just because that page has great “DUI attorney” content, that result is not going to be very useful to either the user or the law firm.

So the SE will generally deliver a website that has the best content relevant to the key phrase,”DUI attorney” together with good location information closest to the searcher.

There are other issues related to local Search optimization (as they are to all SEO efforts) like URL naming, Title tags, H1’s, backlinks, etc.,  that will help achieve page ranking in the local/ regional market but the most important ones are discussed above.
