Selectivity with manual directory and search engine registrations will be worth the effort and save you a lot of spam.

Submissions to Search Engines should be made after each major change or addition. Other than that you could re-register yearly but more often is usually not effective.

Because directories are organized by category and are used by several Search Engines, they should not be ignored in getting your company’s website out there on the web.

You should, at least, register with the major “General Directories” (DMOZ, Best of the Web, GoGuides.Org).

Finally there are some called “Local  Directories” that cover specific geographical regions of the globe (Europe, North America, Caribbean, South America, Middle East etc.) Whichever applies, make it a point to be there.
